As a consequence of the many recent news stories, Information Security is high on everyone’s agenda. Much of this is down to organisations not wishing to suffer the adverse publicity and embarrassment that naturally results.
Organisations’ failure to enforce information security is rightly headline news and they have been justifiably pilloried. These organisations who were entrusted with sensitive and, in many cases, private data, have failed to keep their part of the agreement.
The resulting data losses compromised the privacy and security of millions of individuals and are, in many cases, breaches of the Data Protection Act. Some companies have been told to take steps to ensure the private data is secured or face prosecution.
There have been many other undisclosed data losses where data, confidential to these organisations, has been lost. This may often result in valuable work needing to be recreated (if this is at all possible) at great inconvenience or lost for ever. In many cases sensitive data is in great danger of being disclosed or otherwise becoming available to competitors and other unauthorised people.
It is essential that your organisation does not suffer such data losses and have to deal with the consequences, particularly when there are campaigns afoot to make future incidents fully disclosable as is the case in other parts of the world.
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is asking that "knowingly or recklessly" breaching the Data Protection Act (DPA) could be made a criminal offence, as part of a series of amendments to the act.
The important facts are that data losses are costly in so many ways and apart from having a significant impact on any business’ bottom line, could have more significant impact on those who fail to meet their obligations to maintain their organisations' information securely.
